John Wallace
(Founding Member)
John has been an avid amateur photographer for over 35 years He served for many seasons as the president of Toronto’s Beach Photo Club. Over the years the delights of the digital darkroom and the capabilities of digital SLR’s have led him to abandon film. For John, photography is an adjunct to the experience. To experience is to revel in the glory of the world and its celebration in his images is John’s form of prayer. John’s goal is not to be in the right place at the right time, but rather to exercise his eyes and imagination to capture the best images possible wherever his peregrinations take him. In the stillness of the night he ponders the composition, seeking to “concentrate its essence” and in doing so, relive the experience. The process is fundamental to John’s being, encapsulating three pillars of his personal gospel: Communion with Nature and by extension, the Physical World; Communion with Man; ultimately, exercising the power, the delight, the inspiration of Creativity.

Selby Shanly
Selby has been photographing his surroundings since his parents gave him a Kodak box camera when he was 8. He bought his first SLR at 19 and over the years stretched to darkroom work, astrophotography and medium format. In 2004 he acquired his first digital camera and a pigment ink jet printer and finally was able to get the environment that gave him immediate feedback and control over the image from inception to the final print. Over the years since he has continually refined his skill in processing, printing and display of his images. He believes that the only way to see what the photographer intended is to see the print, to be able to hold it in your hand, to be as near or far from it as you like. As images are printed larger, subtleties in depth and detail appear that completely change the viewer’s experience. Selby joined us for the Nightscapes exhibit and is exhibiting once again in f8's Retrospective in Sept 2016.
